Lawrence is a rock climber and recovering philosophy grad student, who brings a spirit of inquiry to the Fine Woodworking program. After an informal apprenticeship in Japanese carpentry (which mostly involved sweeping floors and digging holes), Lawrence realized that a more hands-on existence was both satisfying and enlightening; that developing a sensitivity towards wood, in all its contexts (architectural, sculptural, etc.) would serve his intellectual and (im)practical purposes; and that the College of the Redwoods would be an ideal environment to cultivate that knowledge.
